The Great Pyramid and Crown Metropol Hotel have interesting and distinctive silhouettes. They are instantly recognisable from a distance and as part of a skyline. Along with the natural wave forms of Wave Rock and Teahupoo, and "Untitled Fragment" by Bridget Riley, they have inspired the form of the design iterations of North Subiaco Iconic.

The undulating sand dunes surrounding the Palestinian Museum inform the interior and exterior forms. This connection provides a delightful juxtaposition. So too, the inspiration of the wave forms of Wave Rock and Teahupoo provide delight to whoever sets eyes on North Subiaco Iconic.

Terracing is a delightful and picturesque form, as demonstrated by the diagrams and photo of the landscaping surrounding the Palestinian Museum. This has inspired the delightful terracing of North Subiaco Iconic, overlooking the wrap around lap pool, West Leederville Train Station, incorporating views to the Perth CBD, Kings Park and the Swan River.

Terracing and views over water provide some of the most delightful architectural responses to natural site features. Examples include the views over the resort pool and Swan River at the Crown Metropol, Perth and views over the resort pool and Red Sea at The Royal Savoy in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. North Subiaco Iconic's terraces look down over the unique circumferential wrap-around lap pool that encircles the project.

Metallic clad fins orientated in a North/South direction shade against East/West sunlight on the Northern facade of the Palestinian Museum. The fins are located between glazing, allowing Northern sunlight to penetrate. North Subiaco Iconic's terraces and balconies shade against the harsh summer Perth sun, whilst admitting the North winter sun to heat up the monolithic thermal mass inside the luxury apartments.

The impression of expansive space coupled with copious natural sunlight appeals to a high-end client, as can be seen in the atrium of the Crown Metropol, Perth. This is also seen in the atrium of The Royal Savoy, Sharm El Sheikh, which also demonstrates the incorporation of abundant luxurious vegetation, which adds to the delight. The canyon effect of 'The Gorge' amenities arcade at North Subiaco Iconic gives the same feeling of abundant space when looking upwards between the two towers, as well as smaller boutique versions of this effect in double height courtyards and living areas in the apartments.

The curved form of the terraces wrapping around the Northern edge of the resort pool at The Royal Savoy, Sharm El Sheikh provides a delightful spatial experience. A similar spatial experience is shared as you splash around the lap pool which hugs the monolithic form of the west tower of North Subiaco Iconic as you swim up to the bar on the North West corner of the complex.

Limestone has a beautiful appearance and is ubiquitous and vernacular to Perth. It has a more luxurious appearance than ordinary face brick. It has a low embodied energy because it is quarried locally and no energy is expended to process it. Examples of precedents illustrating the properties of limestone include the Great Pyramid, Fremantle Prison, and the Palestinian Museum. Other local examples in Perth include the Fremantle Arts Centre, The Roundhouse, the Perth Mint and Penshurst. North Subiaco Iconic capitalises on this local vernacular materiality by dominant limestone exterior cladding on its facades and walkways.

Dark hardwood timber is delightful when juxtaposed with the light colour of limestone as can be seen in Division 2 of Fremantle Prison. Examples of hardwoods that can be sustainably sourced from plantations include Blackwood, Rose Gum, River Red Gum and Messmate (Wood Solutions 2021a, 2021b, 2021c, 2021d). These are delightfully incorporated into the floor and ceiling finishes, door frames and window frames at North Subiaco Iconic.

LUXURIOUS MARBLE

THE AMERICAN BAR

ADOLF LOOS
(Overstreet 2018)
Marble has a delightful appearance, as can be demonstrated in the three different varieties apparent in Adolf Loos' American Bar. Marble is expensive to source so will appeal to the clientele of our project. The juxtaposition of black Onyx marble with light coloured limestone is potentially extremely delightful, as can be seen with structural column finishes next to limestone cladding at North Subiaco Iconic. White marble is also incorporated into floor tiling internally and externally.
